It's really easy to say beige, it's safe, particularly for resale. If you want to add a bit of colour, just remember these tips. Try to limit your colour pallet to 3 colours: 1 main and 2 accents. Your mantle should be the focal point so try to choose a colour that will help it stand out a bit. You don't have to be too matchy-matchy with your existing colours; a few shades lighter or darker in the same colour family can work.

An off white or beige color. You could always paint an accent wall slightly darker than the color on the other walls. Maybe even try doing a textured look at the wall with the fireplace and then use the lightest color of the texture to do the rest of the walls. Try Home Depot they have classes how differnet ways to paint things.

Add blue [ color of rug ] drapes, and maroon and blue print throw pillows for chairs and sofa.
Then add other blue and maroon accessories.
2] Or, paint mantel wall the blue of carpet or maroon of chairs.
Paint other walls white of mantel.
Add blue or maroon drapes, and blue/maroon print pillows, and blue and maroon accessories [ lamps, vases, ornaments, flowerpots, candles/holders ].
