Chaplains are recruited similar as Lawyers.
Chaplains are generally one denomonational however they are well versed with all religions.
It's real similar to the TV Show MASH - with Father Mokaee (spelling).
There are only so many slots and it is a selection process.

I was a Chaplain's Assistant for 7 years in the Army. You must be at least enrolled in seminary to be considered for chaplaincy. You must have a MDIV with at least 72 credits to become a chaplain. Yes, chaplains are denominational -being a denom will place you as a Protestant Chaplain. Yes you must have an endorsement from a religious group in order to be a chaplain. It is not mainly a Christian thing. To be a Chaplain's Assistant, you must score at least a 50 on your ASVAB, qualify for a Secret Clearance, be able to type and you do not have to be religious at all. I hope this info helps. Note-I got out of the Chaplain Corp since it is more political than spiritual. I am now an Infantry Soldier and I am still a religious man.

There are ALL religious chaplains in the military (not just Christian). Usually how it works is that the chaplains are officers, requiring a college degree and going through the regular routes officers go through

All Chaplains are Officers and must have permission from their religious Hierarchy to join the military. Non Christian religions , include Buddhist, Muslim and Jewish.
you must already be a an ordained Cleric/leader/whatever the title is before you can be commissioned into the Chaplain Corps.

Catholic priests are ordained. Protestant ministers have to be graduates of a school of theology or have gone through seminary training. Rabbis are graduates of Yeshivas.
In addition, Catholic priests must obtain advanced permission from their bishop or arch-bishop (if a parish priest) or the head of their religious order (if a "religious" priest).
We now have about half a dozen Muslim Imams in the the various Chaplain Corps. I'm not certain what the requirements are for them, since Islam does not have a priesthood or clergy class, per se.
