I am about to graduate soon, and am thinking about attending OCS for the Navy. I'm concerned though about making payments on bills that I already have (car, loans, etc) while I'm going through the program. How much does an OC get paid while they are going through the program?

I'm graduating in Aug. '08, not tomorrow.

Also, I believe that maturity is making sure that you have a stable financial situation. 12 weeks is a long time to go without making payments on bills. That tends to wreck your credit.

Maturity is also speaking correctly.

I'm not just concerned about pay, I'm concerned about my entire future. That just happens to be one of many questions I couldn't find the answer to.

And I'm a civilian graduating college, not an enlisted member.

It's actually the pay rank of an E-5. But if your only thinking about it now, chances are you are not going to OCS.

It's just not a choice to go to OCS, it's a selection process.

First, I commend you for considering serving in the US Navy. I spent 25 years in the navy and would do it again in a heartbeat.

You should not think that you will be making money to pay off debt while in OCS. (When I was there I think I was being paid E2 pay, E5 is better but still....) In addition, when you leave OCS you will find yourself buying your own uniforms. Officers do not get uniforms issued or an allowance. You will be able to get a 3 month's pay advance, called "dead horse" to help cover the costs. It is repaid without interest over a period of 6 months. That is a difficult 6 months. But keep in mind the OCS program is relative short compared to the time you will spend after becoming an officer. Just remember that things will get better.

as a NPS, you will be paid as an E5 until you graduate OCS, then you will be paid as an O1. It's about an $800 pay raise.

HOWEVER> It can take 6-8 weeks before you see your first paycheck.

I think its the same as an E5, which honestly, isn't a ton.. but if you're single or without a lot of kids, its not horrible.
