It seems like there are a number of people on Y!A that "call foul" and say many of the things police do is entrapment.

So what is your definition of entrapment? Did you get your knowledge of entrapment from someone that doesn’t know what it is, or did you bother to look it up for yourself to truly understand it?

I’m curious. BTW, this is a U.S. based question.

entrapment is a legal defense by which a defendant may argue that he or she should not be held criminally liable for actions which broke the law, because he/she was induced (or entrapped) by the police to commit those acts.

or
ENTRAPMENT - A person is 'entrapped' when he is induced or persuaded by law enforcement officers or their agents to commit a crime that he had no previous intent to commit; and the law as a matter of policy forbids conviction in such a case.

The key concept in entrapment is that BUT FOR the actions of the law enforcement officer you would not have engaged in any criminal conduct. This is why undercover officers posing as prostitutes do not initiate contact with a potential "john" but can FURTHER contact by discussing terms of the deal once the john starts the interaction and indicates what they are looking for. Same with a drug buy, etc.

The key criteria for entrapment is you have to be coerced BY law enforcement to do something. For example, if an underage girl asks you to buy her a bottle of beer, and she is working for the cops, it is not entrapment. But if she coerces you into doing it by threatening to hurt you or something like that, then it is entrapment.

When I watch COPS and there is a sting operation whereby decoys are sent to get men to pick them up for prostitution...that does seem to me to be entrapment; also the offenders post bail almost immediately, kind of a revolving door and seems a waste of time for the PD.

Entrapment is when a police officer asks you to do something illegal, then arrests you for doing it.

To me its simple.

Forcing (or using coersion) on another to do an act that they would not normally do.
