I don't believe the military service should be stopped but it should be made that they are to do their service as soon as they finish school (before further education etc) as once they go onto university etc there never seems a right time to complete their service (marriage/career/kids). I believe the only way to end mandatory military service would be to have a stronger permanent army/navy/air force - at the moment very few men choose this as a profession. If Greece had the type of service men on their payrolls like USA or UK then mandatory service could end.

And stop letting rich people pay off the 'top guys' to avoid service!!!

Greece is within spitting distance of Turkey in Samos and Chios. You figure it out! Commentary:The armed forces aims to be a completely professional military system, with mandatory military service reduced to 6 months or abolished completely by 2008. But due to increased security demands and severe shortages of voluntary conscripts, this is now under review. Draft dodgers claiming a mental health exclusion or other reason for not enlisting are the current focus of government officials who are actively and publicly pursuing violators, regardless of fame or financial position.
