First, fill out your FAFSA, you can not obtain any student loan until you complete the FAFSA. This will search for free money, then show the amount you are eligible to borrow.

Your credit is not taken into consideration with Stafford and Perkins loans, which should pay most of your education costs.

If your parents still declare you as a dependent on their taxes, they will need to apply for a PLUS, or parent loan, even if they know their credit is not worthy. Once they are denied a PLUS loan, you can re-apply for additional Stafford loans in your name and with no credit check.

If you are maxed out on Stafford and/or Perkins, you will need to apply for private funding. At that point, you will be required to pass their credit criteria. A co-signer may be required.

Your FAO office should be able to assist you as well.

Good luck!

Just to clarify. Your parents claiming you as a dependent on their taxes has little to do with you being declared dependent with regards to financial aid. If your parents are denied a PLUS, ask about an unsubsidized stafford, though the amount is limited. The next step would be a private loan. You will probably need a cosigner, but it doesnt have to be one of your parents.
