A CT angio is a diagnostic test where they inject a marker fluid into your veins and then scan you in a CT scanner. It doesn't hurt, is relatively non-invasive (only an injection) and is generally nothing to worry about.
What I'm surprised about is that they didn't give you any info regarding the test... informed consent and all!

an IV catheter is inserted thru a major vessel, usually in the femoral region and run thru the vessels to the kidney, a dye is injected and then CT scan is done to see how the dye moves thru the kidney ensuring that there is adequate perfusion and verifying that the kidney is a good one for transplant. Done correctly, it is not a painful procedure, and takes between 15 and 20 minutes to get the necessary pictures.

a ct (computed tomography) angiogram is just a process used to diagnose and treat certain conditions. pretty much they use special x-ray equipment to make a sort of 3-D x-ray image of your target organs (in this case your kidneys). it shouldnt hurt, its just like getting a normal x-ray but the equipment moves around you, taking several images. i'm not too sure as to how long itll take but apparently theyre quite fast so you should be in and out pretty quickly. I know you probably wont be able to eat and drink before and have to stay very still (which might be the most discomfort youll experience)

The contrast dye injected during angiogram can harm the kidneys. Let your dad's cardiologist know about you dad's renal failure so they can take precaution. I have seen patient's who had renal insufficiency due to contrast dye. It is better that he go ahead with the angiogram. Changes are the blockages are also affecting the kidneys function. There is no enough blood going through the kidneys because the heart is not functioning properly.
