Hi JJ.
A protein shake is not much more than a powdered form of the protein (casein and whey) from milk. They use certain processes to extract the quality protein from the liquid, leaving most of the lactose and saturated fat behind.
Are protein shakes good for you? Well, used in moderation, they can be very healthy (boosts immune system and increase cell metabolism).
In your boyfriends case, he's very wise in drinking some protein before the workout (and hopefully he's having some after the workout). The workout actually breaks muscle tissue down. The body uses the protein to repair the muscle and make it stronger- which is his goal.
Of course, protein shakes shouldn't be the ONLY protein intake, as whole foods have many nutrients and other benefits that you can't get from the liquid protein.
So, bottom line- protein shakes are good in moderation.
I wrote an article about it, if you care to check it out, I'll leave a link to it below.
If you have any other questions, I can be reached at the site, feel free to fire away.

Yes, they are. Protein shakes, if made right, contain a perfect balance of carbs and protein. The protein he gets in those shakes are crucial for muscle recovery and eventually muscle growth. But like anything else, too much is not great either. But as long as he's drinking 2 or 3 a day and eating a healthy balanced diet, I'd say he is doing good.

Protein is a nutrient that is needed daily by the body. Protein has many functions:
It helps to build, repair, and maintain body cells and tissues like your skin, muscles, organs, blood, and even bones.
It also forms enzymes and hormones that enable your body to function normally. Enzymes enable chemical reactions to take place in your body. Hormones signal the appropriate enzymes to start working on what the body needs.
Studies indicate that consuming whey protein before meals may help limit subsequent hunger and food intake, and that ingesting whey before exercise may enhance the fat-burning effects of the workout. Following article explains how whey protein may assist people seeking to shed pounds and maintain an optimal body weight.

in general the shakes are good for you, but anything you consume in excess can be bad for you. if he is drinking 2-3 shakes a day and eating high protein foods he may be consuming more protein than his body is using. the body will store the excess protein as body fat

I think they are ok, but they do have a lot of weird ingredients. So I think there are healthier options.
