Need? No, not really. A quiet place is nice, but not necessary.

One can recite prayers anywhere, even in bus, train(Metro) or Air-plane or side walk. But to Meditate one needs a calm place.Close the eyes and all the cognitive senses need to be withdrawn in- wardly(Prathyaakaaram-in YOGA) disconnect the 5 media from cognitive senses(Dhaarana in YOGA) and Meditate(Dhyanam in YOGA)-preferably utter within oneself a brief/short "Mantram"-repeatedly-it will give the desired effects-in a joint study by a well known Neurologist and Professor of Electronics in I.I.T.(with his micro-electronic gadgets) have shown that it gives a lot of positive benifits. Some REAL YOGIS(Not upstarts and fraudulant YOGIS) are capable of going into Nir Vikalpa Samaadhi(it needs to be elaborately explained)--I do not agree one can "Meditate" anywhere under any circumstances-then it is NOT "Meditation".

Yes. Jesus said not to be like the self-righteous leaders in His day where they would pray and meditate in the open so others could see and praise them. Jesus said go to your prayer closet and meditate on the Lord where you can get approval from God and not man.

to listen to that quietness of the mind during the Now, not the past or future, I could meditate anywhere but find going near the water most centered and self aware.

No.

One can meditate anywhere, although it is easier and more effective with a quiet, comfortable place.

My favorite is practicing Thich Naht Hanh's "brake light meditation." Whenever I see a brake light in traffic, commence controlled breathing. It's very effective, and makes my hour-long commute much more enjoyable.

Peace.
