Is there something in the Koran against dogs?

They think they are dirty. Lots of religions sacrificed dogs to appease their god. They are seen as filthy animals like pigs are seen to the Hebrew culture.

Muslims don't hate dogs. In fact, according to the Koran it's a sin to hate any of Allah's creatures. They just don't want to be around them very much.

BUT dogs are considered Unclean animals. After all, ordinary, average dogs eat garbage, carrion, and vomit. They drink fetid water. They lick their private areas - and then want to lick your face. They carry fleas and rabies and other diseases.

And in the Koran, cleanliness is truly emphasized. Anything unclean is rejected.

There are many reasons for that - mostly for disease control. Let's take pork for example - it's unclean because you can get deathly sick from eating undercooked pork - and in a land where firewood is not easy to come by - yeah, that is important. Same with dogs. Since water is a true commodity in most Muslim countries, a dirty, flea-ridden dog stinking of the carrion it rolled in - and then ate - is not terribly welcome a guest.

But that doesn't mean Muslims despise dogs. They just don't want to be around them.
