If you can do billing, you will have to know coding. In order to get the bills paid by the insurance companies, you have to make sure the codes are correct. Office billers are often working with the doctors on what billing codes are going to work best for insurance purposes.

Also billers understand that if you fill under Medicare with one code it gets paid, but if you file it with another insurance company for the same condition you need asnother code to get paid.

Additionally, as the first responder recommended, take some office administration courses along the way. It is the best way to move up to clinic manager.

By the way, at my offices, I never had a coder, I always had the medical billing person do the coding...just a hint.

Coders are often used by insurance companies though, and an insurance executive may have a different perspective.

The answer depends on what your looking for in a job.

If you want infinite challenge, some long hours, a significant amount of working with people, and reasonable pay, Medical Office Administration program is what I would suggest. This would also be a track for clinic management and hospital administration.

Medical coding and billing is also a challenge, but the hours are more set, a whole lot less dealing with people, but the pay is lower. However, this option could lead to a clinic or hospital manager/director position in Medical Records or Billing.

Why not take an aptitude test here http://gsx1.com/free-aptitude-test.html and hope they suggest something interesting at the end, they often offer jobs according to the results so it might be useful, if anything you'll know what suits your personality. When you know that, you can then look for a college etc. you'll find tons more tests here too http://www.job--listings.info/
hope it helped, have fun.
