Singer and Brother both make models of sewing machines for around $100. They usually have the basic stitches, automatic bobbin winding, and sometimes some fancy stitches. I got mine at Target.

Go to sewing machine shops and try out several of the floor models they have on display to see what features you want.

Mostly you need ease of threading, replacing needles, filling bobbins, straight and basic zigzag stitches.

Then you can go to second hand stores and find a good machine which will fit in your budget.

I got my first machine after making a cape and putting in a heavy zipper out of fine wool totally by hand. My grandmother rewarded me with the machine! I wore that cape for a great number of years, like 20 for church and other dressier events.

My second machine I went into debt to purchase! I have had this machine for 35 years!

My thought is to buy the one that will do the best job for you for maybe 10 years. But you need to know how they work before buying one!

Would you buy a car off the lot without knowing how to drive it or if it even works the way you would want it to? No! So don't get a machine until you know how they work.

In that price range, I'd definitely send you looking for a good used machine. http://www.cet.com/~pennys/faq/smfaq.htm
I'd like to see you get something with a very good straight stitch, a good zigzag, a buttonhole method that you like, and adjustable presser foot pressure.

Best source for these is often a sewing machine store with repair facilities, but you can often pick up pre-loved machines from estate sales for very little. John Giordano's book on sewing machines has some good suggestions of older models that are well worth having, and information on choosing and maintaining a good used machine.

You can get a decent sewing machine in a department store for about $100.00. After a couple of years if you find that you are sewing several times a week, you may want to graduate to a more sturdy machine.

Whatever you buy, don't neglect the yearly tuneup.
