It's just about impossible to visualize nothingness. It took a supernatural Being to create the world and all that's in it. Best advice I can give on the subject is "read the bible". Any translation would give some answers but if you want true answers, don't bother with the New World Version which is not a translation but a revision of real bibles, adding words to change the meaning and leaving out words which distorts the meaning of the true bible. Would suggest the King James Version.

Well, if the ancient Mayan culture can create a SYMBOL (the number 0) for nothing, then I suppose an advanced society like our own could fathom nothingness......

I doubt it.
We are "somethingness" which means we cannot fathom nothingness.
To put this idea into perspective: I'm white. I can't fathom what being black is like. I can imagine, but most blacks will laugh off my efforts.
We can imagine what "nothingness" is, but because we have no basis of comparison, I'm sure our ideas are laughable.

Since you exist, it is much more likely for you to able to fathom something existing than not existing. It's just the way we're made. Doesn't make it true, though.

Remember what it was like before you were born? It's kind of like that. With our big brains we can know that we are finite, that doesn't mean we can understand it.
Was this question about conciousness after death or the begininng of the universe?
If it was about the universe, we can only observe within the limits of the universe, beyond those limits are unknow and imperceptable.

Nothingness is illogical and cannot exist. Anything you could TRY to label as "nothingness" actually has something to it.

>can we even fathom nothingness?
It doesn't seem so. All our logic is based on the idea of something existing.
