The original stereo/radio we have in the car now aren't working well, plus there is no CD player (only cassette). The radio doesn't catch any AM stations either, and we like listening to sports stations on AM. I was looking for a birthday present for my husband and decided to get him a new one (he can install it himself), but can't find any info on what I need to buy to replace the old one with. Can anyone recommend a stereo system (CD+radio) for 1997 Mercury Mountaineer that is not extremely expensive? Thanks!

I've always liked Pioneer products...check out a local Best Buy or Circuit City or stereo shop for options. DIY install may require special tools and faceplate/harness which also cost more money. Check pricing for units with installation and without plus any additional hardware/wiring needed if your hubby wants to DIY. Most good quality receivers run 100-200.00 or more depending on features you want like IPOD capable or not, remote or steering wheel controls, satellite ready, etc...
Install-dr.com has info on installing yourself as does The12volt.com

$100 for satellite receiver(which has like 25 sports dedicated stations)

bestbuy- if you buy here they will install for free
