This is a fairly new computer (like 8 or 9 months old). They never worked, even when I first got the computer. I am connected to the internet when I try to download the updates, and it says that they are downloading for a few seconds, then say that the download has failed and move on to the next update on the list and do the same thing.

a) any idea why this is happening?

b) is it critical that I get these updates, or is it not really a bug deal if I don't worry about it?

You definitely want HP's updates. There has to be a reason why they fail. I had a problem with downloads when using dialup. Since switching to cable - no problem.

Also, after downloading IE7 my HP printer wouldn't work. I e-mailed HP - they were aware of the problem and provided me with a fix.

I strongly urge you to contact HP. They offer good support. Before e-mailing, have handy the model and serial numbers of your PC.
