Christians believe that God encompasses all; His presence is everywhere. Therefore, God is one of us, when someone is in need, when someone is hurting, and we can be God to them by providing what we can for their well being.
God is here, He is each and every one of us, yet He is an entity, a being, separate in nature from us. God is spirit and has no physical form, yet a being that is separate from us. Sort of like husband and wife--the 2 are one, yet individuals.

I loved Joan of Arcadia, hated that they took it off! Apparently the judgmental manipulative God of Saving Grace has a better demographic.
As to that song, really listen to the lyrics sometime. It's not a song of praise!

A fool like one of us. Trying to find the way home. The kingdom of God is within you.

Is it not true that most believe that god needs to be invited into their lives?
Isn't that the same as a vampire by legend?
If god lives inside of us, then he is one of us, according to theory.

If God had a name, what would it be
And would you call it to his face
If you were faced with him in all his glory
What would you ask if you had just one question
Yeah, yeah, God is great
Yeah, yeah, God is good
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
What if God was one of us
Just a slob like one of us
Just a stranger on the bus
Trying to make his way home
If God had a face, what would it look like
And would you want to see
If seeing meant that you would have to believe
In things like heaven and in jesus and the saints
And all the prophets and...
Yeah, yeah, God is great
Yeah, yeah, God is good
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
What if God was one of us
Just a slob like one of us
Just a stranger on the bus
Trying to make his way home
Tryin to make his way home
Back up to heaven all alone
Nobody callin on the phone
cept for the pope maybe in rome
Yeah, yeah, God is great
Yeah, yeah, God is good
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
What if God was one of us
Just a slob like one of us
Just a stranger on the bus
Trying to make his way home
Just tryin to make his way home
Like a holy rolling stone
Back up to heaven all alone
Just tryin to make his way home
Nobody callin on the phone
cept for the pope maybe in rome
