It could be absolutle anything, but it just means that your son needs some help with figuring out some things in life. The doctor probably doesn't know which of the many possibilites is actually happening, so why get you all upset over things that aren't even close to being true?
The doctor should at least tell you if the troubles are more about fears, or testtaking, or listening problems, where he just can't understand what is being said or done, so he takes things all wrong.
Your boy is going to be OK.

I would say the doctor wasn't very helpful. If you went to a doctor for what you thought was a physical problem and he said it was a mental disturbance, he should have referred you to mental health. If he didn't, call on your own to see if you can get your son in to see what is happening.

Basically all I can tell you is that whatever is bothering him is in his head, not physical. You really need to contact your son's doctor to get a more clear diagnosis. Being mentally disturbed can range in meaning from being really upset to neurosis to even psychosis.

I would go see another doctor then. If my doctor said one of my children had a mental disturbance and then didn't explain--I would be asking a lot of questions!!! It could be a plethera of things.
