I don't wish to take the wind out of TheHumbl...'s sails, but CCleaner does most of the things he recommends. I hate it when people tell you to defrag your hard disk every week or so. Unless you add and remove dozens of programs a week, defrag will do very little to speed up your computer. It just
makes disk reads faster (sometimes), but most of the time your hard disk is idle. To improve speed, depending of course on what is wrong, and where the problems lay:
More memory
Partitioned discs
Adware removal
CCleaner
Startup functions
then
AVG - it should be running anyway
Free up disk space - old unused stuff
Defrag. I do mine every six months if I remember, and it makes zilch difference to the speed of my computer because all the other stuff is under control.

well instead of software why not start with yourself, clear all of the clutter from 'my pictures', my music', 'my documents' etc, also have a look at the programs that you have installed and remove all of those that you just don't use and don't need, clear all of this and already your system will start to run faster and leaner, when all of this is done if you still need the help of software, and most of us do, then try running some of the free stuff that has already been suggested, it is almost always our own clutter and junk that slows our computers down. take care and good luck.

Not really. There isn't any particualr software that can identify all the errors on your PC.
You can get CCleaner which will clean out some junk and it can fix some registry errors.
It may not make your PC go faster but there will be less clutter.

Here is my checklist which I run through at least every two weeks and sometimes less. Believe me, the more often you do it, the less time it takes and it will increase speed. All free!
1. Set wallpaper and screensavers to blank or none — they run continuously in the background and use memory.
-----right-click on the desktop, select Properties
-----click the screensaver tab, on the left where it says "screensaver," select none.
-----click the desktop tab, for background, select none
2. Review your start menu – remove anything you don’t need on a daily basis — load games, etc. on an as-needed basis.
-----click Start, Settings, Taskbar and Start Menu
-----click the Start Menu tab
-----select a program you do not want to load at Startup, then click remove.
-----Caution -- do not touch anything you are not sure of or you will mess up your computer royally.
3. From Internet Explorer, click Tools, Internet Options: delete cookies, delete files (offline), and clear history. (You can also set days to store history to 0.)
----- These actions will clear your computer’s cache. (For a description of cache, go to http://help.yahoo.com/l/ph/yahoo/mail/access/access-27210.html )
4. Run Disk Cleanup, Scandisk, Defrag at least every two weeks (the more frequently they are run, the less time they take).
-----These can be found in Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools.
5. Periodically, click Start, Programs, Run — then type ipconfig renew
(that’s ipconfig space renew).
6. Optional: Speed vs Goodies — in the Control Panel, System, Advanced, Performance, Settings — you can have visual effects or let Windows select the best options. I am using “Best Performance.” Your choice.
These things should increase speed and free up memory as much as possible.
