I have found this is the least "crusty" when air dried:
Home Made Play dough

2 cups flour
1 cup salt
2 tablespoons cream of tarter
2 cups of water
1 tablespoons mineral oil
food coloring
Mix all ingredients in a saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring until stiff. Allow to cool, then knead.

Use paste food coloring for the colors mix in small batches and wear rubber gloves to prevent staining your hands. Only use plastic bowls for storage and mixing. Then either bake at 250 (brush with water to glaze) and allow 15-25 minutes for drying time . Watch closely as some ovens run hot and you don't want the clay to burn - or air dry 12-24 hours (depending on the humidity). Good Luck!

Maybe you can try making playdoh with koolaid ...you can make it smell like grape or whatever you want or the peanut butter one . There are lots of good recipies but I would say you just would have to expierment with the one you like the best. You could also do other activities for fine motor skills like puzzles, drawing and coloring, cutting paper... Kool aid playdoh recipie 2 1/2 cups of flour 1/2 cup salt 2 packages dry unsweetened Kool-Aid 2 cups boiling water 3 tablespoons oil Mix the dry ingredients together in a bowl. Mix the liquids together and pour them over the dry ingredients. Stir the mixture until it forms a ball (this may take a while - keep stirring). As the mixture cools, it will become less sticky. After the mixture has cooled, take it out of the bowl and knead it until it is smooth Peanut Butter Playdoh 3/4 Cup Peanut butter 3/4 C wheat germ 1/4 C honey 1/4 C Powder milk nuts, raisins, sunflower seeds and coconut Mix the top four ingredients together in a bowl and use the nuts, raisins, seeds and coconut to decorate. Enjoy This is totally edible. When children get done playing with it, put into baggy for next time.

Does it have to be play dough - or just something similiar? I think "Play-Doh" has a modeling clay that is for project that you want to keep - play clay maybe? Try doing a google search for modeling clay recipes rather than play dough recipes? I would not reccoment using cocoa powder as a dye. I with think that it would cause your dough to be sticky and go bad after a few days -or attract bugs.

Do you have to use play dough. It is going to crack no matter what you do. If you can use modeling clay. I am not sure if it will turn brown, but my assumption would be that it would change colors. It probably won't turn an exact shade of brown unless you are using white playdough, which is harder to fine than the neons. Believe me, as the parent of a 6 year old I know. Check Toys r Us.

Here is a recipe for home-made play dough. To keep it moist, brush some oil over the clay each day as you use/mold it. Otherwise I think you might have to splurge for modeling clay, which will dry out but won't get crusty. But it can get very expensive.

Hope this helps and good luck!
