I am talking about normal people who make say between 40,000 and 100,000 a year... How big do you think the diamond should be? How much should be spent? To the guys, if this was the woman of your dreams how much would you spend? Just curious....

I hate to burst your bubble, but normal (or average) people do NOT make anywhere close to $100,000 a year.

The jewelers claim 2 months salary is the way you figure out how much to spend and not 3 months like the gold digger named ykantski. I say whatever you can afford without going broke is a good amount to spend. The jewelers just want you to spend your hard earned dollars there, so I do not take their statement as objective. I would suggest 10% or less of the yearly income should be fine. You can get a nice diamond for $4,000 to $10,000 of course. No need to go broke. You will need more money for the wedding and honeymoon. You really do not want to start your future being heavily in debt now do you?

I think it should also depend on the people who are buying it. Some don't feel a big amount has to be spent. I would never want to spend thousands on a ring. The ring represents your bond and love and doesn't have to cost a lot of money. It depends on individuals preferences.

the guiode is like 2 months salary. That is after taxes and such. But really it should not matter. You should get a ring that you like and if she doesn't like it she is a who re and you should kick her to the curb.

The baseline for an engagement ring, though you could of course veer from this, is three months' salary. As for style, check out the rest of your girlfriend's jewelry. Check for silver, gold, platinum, white gold, lots of stones? What size? Make sure that it's something that you think she would like, not just a status-symbol diamond.

I feel the girl should be happy with whatever her man gives her if she truly loves him. There are too many shallow women out there that think the size of the ring = how much he loves me.

well, let's see I'll base this off my family; on my mom's side of the family a $15,000 would be considered a cheap ring( as they are all very well off), but for my dad's side of the family(whom make the normal salary of $25,000 to $75,000 a year.) $500 to $1,000 would be consider really nice and more than enough.. So, as long as they love you and are sincere the price and size shouldn't count! I'd be happy with a cheap, but decent ring as long as his heart was in it.

Gold plated brass with a cubic zirconia from Walmart, they run you like $12,95 if you're a big spender and so inclined.
