my long-distance boyfriend texted me on my birthday (yesterday) but didn't get me a gift or online card.....what's his deal?

The better question should be what's your deal. The fact that you brought this up on an online forum means you probably aren't enjoying the relationship anyway.

If it's long distance, did you think he could have sent something but it hasn't gotten there yet? Did you think that you're lucky that you have a boyfriend who actually remembers your birthday? Did you ever think "hey I'm lucky enough to actually have a boyfriend"?

You're in a much better position than I think you might realize. If you're looking for an excuse to dump (which it sounds like you are) him then just do it and save everyone else a headache.

If you're looking to make it work then be an adult, grab your balls, and talk to him. But for goodness sakes stop whining!!!

A serious boyfriend would probably send a gift...BUT in almost every relationship there are times when you simply mess up. (Maybe he forgot or doesn't think birthdays are big deals--guys don't always place the same importance on "ceremony.") You should consider this action in the context of his overall behavior to you.
Does he:
-take the initiative to contact you as much as you contact him?
-let you know what's going on in his life (without prompting from you)?
-make an effort to visit you whenever possible?
-support you emotionally at other times?
-express ongoing interest in your activities?

If yes to above, then don't worry. Otherwise, consider him a long distance acquaintance and get yourself a real home-town boyfriend.

Some people weren't raised with the importance of greeting cards. I personally would much prefer to see someone or hear from someone on my birthday to getting a card. What really is the difference to you of a text message that says happy birthday that you will delete soon and an online greeting card saying the same thing that you will delete soon?

Maybe the card and/or gift got delayed or lost in the mail? Long-distance relationships are difficult, but at least he did think of you and remember your birthday. It would have been nicer if he called though. If this sort of thing becomes more frequent, then I'd be concerned.

Apparently the boy friend feels that contact is enough. What makes you think that a card or gift are in order? Birthdays were gift days when you were young. Maybe you still are.

I would be more upset that he didnt actually pick up the phone and call me! A text message is so impersonal! Maybe he is going to surpise you with something? Depending on how serious the relationship is, you should tell him you were upset. Don't make it seem like it's the present that you are upset about because then he could say you were just being materialistic. Tell him you wish he would have taken more time from his day to show you he cares about you on an important day such as your birthday.

It's not always about the gift. Be more upset with the fact that he did't call you instead of sending a simple text message.

It really depends on how long you've been dating. A few months: then it's probably forgivable. Longer than a year: he better have an excuse, or he simply doesn't care enough about you to remember.

He's probably going to do something special for you when he sees you. If he doesn't do anything special he probably doesn't deserve you.
