The Cup teams use nitrogen because it's a cleaner air with no moisture in it. Moisture builds heat, and when compressed air is used, there is water in the airlines and air systems, and when that water gets into the tire, it will expand the tire and puts heat into it, and will eventually cause a tire problem(NOL/Tommy Baldwin)(10-6-1999)

They use nitrogen because there is no water vapor in compressed nitrogen. Water vapor inside the tire causes a heat build up and increases tire pressure. Nitrogen is more stable and has less pressure change inside the tire. It is more predictable.

They use nitrogen. They have been for many years. Because it heavier then air in a gaseous state. Hence not as much pressure increase as normal air.

No it is in fact not "normal air." As a matter of fact a lot of tire shops are offering Nitrogen for tires to increase gas mileage.
