Ok - I dont know that they are absolutly mushrooms - all I was wondering is if anyone has ever seen them or have an idea what they are. They have the appearance of a mushroom and are hollow inside. they seem to pop up in the corner of the yard after it rains.

We have those in my yard, they look sort of like little penises. hahaha.
Anyway, here's a whole page about them:
http://www.mushroomexpert.com/mutinus_elegans.html
There's no information on that website as to whether or not they're edible, but I found another:
http://www.kerrysgarden.us/2006/05/07/dog-stinkhorn-aka-mutinus-caninus/
This site says "All stinkhorns are edible. The Dog Stinkhorn in particular is considered a delicacy by the Chinese, and can be bought in dried form at specialty shops (without the sticky, stinky spore goo).

Forget about getting rid of them, as it’s easier to pick them off as they pop up, and your kids and pets are safe around them."

So your pup is safe!
I hope this helps
