I want to add a small apartment to my house for my Mom to live in. I think we are going to close in the carport and add some to that as well. I have no idea where to get started. Do I call a contractor what is the first step to take? Any advise is appreciated.

Cost estimate.. figure at least $100 - $200 a square foot for a budget $.

If this does not scare you off try to find a contractor by word of mouth, city building department, or at a reputable building supply house. Someone who does design build would be preferred.

Call the contractor up and briefly discuss what you want and ask for a W.A.G estimate ( wild *** guess) on what it typically cost. Tell him you do not want to waste his time until you know what you can afford. If the cost does not scare you off meet with the contractor and go from there.

If you do proceed with a contract make sure your payments are tied to a contract progress schedule.

I'd recommend that you contact a design / build company. Make sure when you choose a contractor that they can provide references, proof of liability insurance, and a written estimate // contract. They should also provide an estimated construction schedule. Good luck and kudo's for taking care of the folks!
