Yes I saw that report last night. It is very interesting how much honey bees plays a huge roll on our crops. It seems to be a dismal situation that scientists have known about for quite sometime. They mentioned that a particular chemical, mites and environmental change may be causing a colony collapse of bee hives, which is a must for crops. I am hopeful they will find out why the bees are getting this virus before we get to the point of no return. There must be a reason!!! Also I do not think people are going to starve. There are still allot of veges that do not require pollination by bees. We have birds and butterflies. Let's hope for the best.
Pray for the little bees and use as least insecticide as possible.

Albert Einstein said when all the bee have gone from this planet we will have 4 more years left to live ,
This maybe exaggerated because there are other ways to pollinate plants and we have so many alternative foods ,but we will certainly be affected in a big way

Changes in temperatures cause changes in the micro biotic world that work their way up the food chains ,regular colonies of microbes are dying off ,whilst invading species increase, and so a parasitic mite and disease are killing the bees as well as killer bees.

Also the spraying for mosquitoes kills other insects inadvertently, with drastic effects .

And the bee keepers moving the hives around and disinfecting the hives has also very bad effects ,we cannot interfere with Nature and NOT expect anything to happen

90% of the feral (wild) bee population in the United States has died out.

In the Netherlands bee diversity is down 80 percent in the sites researched,

and some "bee species are declining or have become extinct in Britain."

The numbers of wildflowers that depend on pollination have dropped by 70 percent.

If bees continue to die off so would the crops they support and with that would ensue major economic disruption and possibly famine.

Bees are not the only pollinators but if these things are happening to bees we can bet on it that other insects are also in trouble

.So much follows the insects in the food chains ,that we can expect a lot of very bad changes in the environment .

I'm sure most beekeepers have realised that the collapses are down to the stress of moving the bees, so they do have a remedy if they are willing to put the effort into organizing agriculture appropriately.

One answer suggested that all vege's need pollination, in fact it is just fruits and squashes. There are not an abundance of other insects to pollinate, due to the use of chemicals on the land. most farmland would be barren without the use of fertiliser, the soil is knackered and does not support a diverse ecosystem.

An organic agriculture system is the only way to feed the world's population indefinitely.

The GM companies first responsibility is to make money for thier shareholders, the same as every other company.

Don't be dismayed by the gloom and doom from some people.

Fact is there are many other insects, bugs, reptiles, birds and mammals that pollinate. There is the wind as well, many plants are wind pollinated. The problem is human crops like vegetables. Most veggies require an out side source for pollination.

Next time you are in a garden, that is not treated with pesticides, take the time to watch the plants. You'll see ants, beetles, and butterflies busy at work.

Hopefully you saw that NOVA about honey bees. That was very interesting and educational. Just a little to much stress on the gloom and doom. But, I highly recommend that everyone see it.

hopefully at least in north America the native insects that did the pollination before honeybees were introduced by Europeans will return to their former numbers & do the job(if they are still around today)
reportedly the native Americans called honeybees English flies & said whenever you see them it meant that white men would be in the area within 2 years.
from this saying we can deduce that travel & comunication between various groups of early Americans was more wide spread than we now popularly assume.

Plants that do not require bees to pollinate, like corn.
