I'm an average chef/baker. I bake probably around 2-4 times a week. I've been wanting to buy a kitchenaid for a long time now and I've decided I want to buy either an artisan or a heavy duty. I don't think I need the power of the pro 600, so it's between the heavy duty and artisan. What's the difference between the heavy duty and the heavy duty plus? What are the advantages and disadvantages of bowl-lift and tilt-head?

Mine's over 9 years old and still works great! It's a KitchenAid Ultra Pro with the tilt-head. It's a total workhorse, and it wasn't even top of the line back then. I think it was about $350. I'd go for the tilt-head, since it's easy to clean the nooks and crannies when dough or whipped cream splatters. I even used it at my restaurant (though it's not a commercial mixer) so it got a good work-out. I don't think you'll go wrong with any KA mixer. Just make sure you can use attachments with it, like the shredder or grinder. If mine died today, I'd have another one on order within 10 minutes.

I have the Artisan and it is great with more than enough power. The tilt head is easy to use and there are all types of great attachments you can buy later if you want. No idea what the difference is with the heavy duty/heavy duty plus but they are much more expensive and if you are just a regular baker at home I don't think you would need to buy the more expensive one.

I have a heavy duty. It never hurts to have a bit more power than you think you might need, some bread doughs get a bit tough on that motor. As for the bowl lift and tilt head, I suggest going with the tilt. The bowl lift is a bad thing, sometimes makeing it hard to get the bowl out or adding stuff into the bowl. The tilt is also easier to clean, and to keep clean. Happy cooking!

The more wattage, the better. And the general rule with KA mixers is the average cost is $1.00 for every watt. So a 450 watt mixer, the retail is normally $450.00. The Professional 600 series would be my choice.
