A lot of people change their voices when they are playing with animals, mostly because animals respond well to it. When you talk with "baby talk" tones to a dog, they know you are playing with them and most dogs get excited with that particular tone of voice. It is the same thing when you are mad about something they did wrong and use an angry tone or stern tone. They understand that that tone means they did something wrong and you are not happy with them.

The same goes for when people, in particular women, talk to young children/babies. The voice will be high pitched because the mind tells them it's the way to talk to a child to make him/her feel more comfortable around the adult/older person.

The high pitched tone is used to say "oh my gosh- he/she/it is adorable!"

Don't ask me why they do it, I don't know. I do it too, and I hate it. Yes, it's called dog talk, and when it's towards humans it's called "baby talk".

It annoys the heck out of young toddlers. And most dogs get really excited when you speak to them like that.
So, hope that helps!

I use a difference voice to talk to my dog. I use a more excited, slightly higher pitched voice. It gets her attention better, especially during training sessions. It lets her know that when I use this certain voice, we're going to work (and work is fun!). Versus when I'm just talking to another human.

I think people do it to try and show the dog that they are friendly since a dog can't understand what you are saying but maybe they can understand the tone of your voice.

My daughter Michelle has a one year old daughter Riley, and the same thing happens.

It is not just the tone of voice, but the incorrect childish language (as if to teach cuteness to baby, instead of vocabulary).

I don't like teaching baby words like "num-nums" instead of "food"...but Michelle swears that Riley invented such coloquial baby talk words on her own.

Yeah! All babies come up with those baby talk words themselves. Sure, I can believe that.

I was born at night, but not LAST night!

I always do it too especially when I'm praising my dogs. I suppose we think the change in the tone of voice expresses to our dogs that we approve of them and their actions. My dogs always respond with tail wagging.

People do the same thing when they talk to baby's. I think it's just when they know that puppy's or baby's don't know what your saying it's just natural to change the tone of your voice. I'm guilty of it to.

It's the same reason people change their voice when they talk to a human baby too. LOL It just something people do.
