What you can do is try to remove as much butter as you can from the inside of the toaster. You're going to have to take a paper towel and wipe down the inside, but avoiding the heating elements so you don't break them. It won't be easy, but it depends upon how much butter fell into the toaster.

If you dropped a pat that pretty much went straight down, then it might be easy. If you dropped a whole stick, then that's a lot of work to clean out.

As long as you don't see globs of oil or butter, I'd recommend taking the toaster to the sink and plugging it in and turning it on to smoke off any residual oil. However, only do this when you've wiped off 99% of the butter.

If you can't do that, then looks like you owe your friend a new toaster.

Well... as we would say in the US... "Smooth move ex-lax."

That hasn't happen to me before. It 's really awful when something happens with some kitchen appliance at a friend's house though especially when you don't mean it.

Butter is really bad for burning so I suggest if you can, use strong kitchen paper towel or a dried kitchen sponge and let it soak up as much better as you can. Make sure the electricity is off though!!

Then put another slice of bread in there and try it. The more butter you get out the less burning it will make. Hope all will be well. Tell your friend anyway, and tell her you cleaned it up. Thats for butter, but if the container fell in, it will stick to the bottom and that may be a problem.

I haven't ever dropped butter... Did drop cheese in once... I was trying to melt it... Didn't work... Wasn't pretty :P... The toaster kinda went on fire... There's a pully outty thing on toasters... Find that and hopefully that will solve the problem... My toast wasnt lucky enough to be saved...

Unplug it, turn it over - there is a latch to open it up and help you get in it to clean.

Kind of funny but I can see how this could happen.
