To the person who said let us learn from history--try reading your history first. the europeans were wrong twice in a century and both europeans and americans paid in blood to stop the evil they tried to appease. From your perspective, letting Adolph Hitler come to power was the correct move. Iran is nowhere near Pakistan. Iran has an avowed policy of wanting to destroy Israel and from their little demonstration the other day--the USa AS well. Letting the Iranians have nuclear technology--is suicidal for the rest of the world. These folks fund and arm terrorist groups--most of the GI's killed in IRAQ are related to Iranian weapons. The Iranians do not need to develop a nuclear bomb. 1/2 lb of enriched uranium or plutonium powdered, and released into Berlin, or London, or New York would make areas of the city unihabitable for hundreds of years. Casulties and cancers would run in the hundreds of thousands. Radiation poisioning would cause your gums to bleed, hair to fall out, skin to slough off, agonzing pain as your organs started shutting down. If you or your children were exposed as a result of such a dirty bomb would you then change your position? Are you absolutely certain that Iran would not donate nuclear material to a terrorist group if they were assured it would be used in Hafia, Jersulam, London, New York?

Excellent & concise answer from Ralfcoder. We aren't limited to two choices.
Also, I'd like to make two more points.
1. Does anyone remember the deceit & fear of WMD that led the US to allow GWB invasion of Iraq? No WMD. "Some" of these lies have surfaced, but the depths never will be, in an administration of anrachism & secrecy. Even if they were, the stench would be overwhelming. We have absolutely NO proof that Iran is obtaining "nukes."
2. Iran has every right to develop nuclear energy, & even nuclear weapons, especially with the dyslexic, Texan blood lust breathing down their necks. As some polisci major said, nuclear weapons are acceptable in some countries, but only when it's to our benefit. WHO has the right to determine what country can have nuclear weapons, & what country cannot? An analogy could be--WE are the good guys in this neighbourhood, we're friends with A, B & C, & will be well armed, by gum, but we don't like D, so let's take away D's protection & destroy D.
So many other factors that should be considered, yet those who are informed already know them, & to the close minded, I'd be blowing in the wind.

Edit: Yes, Mark S, IF they do anything offensive toward us--but NEVER fallacious "preemptive" strikes as in Iraq.

I would have to say let them have the nukes. If you attack Iran right now it would bankrupt the United States and force the draft. The US cannot afford to continue being the world's policeman.

If Iran gets the nuke, they're not crazy enough to use it. They know if they launch at Israel, they will become a glowing parking lot within minutes. Iran wants the bomb so that they can use the 'Mutually Assured Destruction' defense.

MOI - Research history before you bash the US about WWII and the dropping of the atomic bombs. The US was brought into the war after being attacked by the Japanese. It was a long and bloody war with tens of thousands of US deaths. If the US had to invade Japan to end the war, because the Emperor vowed to never surrender, it would have caused hundreds of thousands of US and Japanese deaths. Read about the invasion of Okinawa and what a death trap it was for both armies and the innocent people of that island. The US did the right thing dropping those bombs, it saved more lives then would have been killed.

Iran wants to use the nukes as a stepping stone into forming a greater Islamic empire and uniting all Islamic countries under a Radical Islamic government. Their long term goal is acheive this and gain enough power to take on the West and conquer it in order to fulfill Islamic prophecy, once they try to do this will ignite a World War in which at least 1,000,000,000 people will die.

So do whatever it takes to not let Iran get nukes.

The situation now is just like pre-World War 2, where the facist elements where at its infancy of gaining power and the democracies were all too timid to do anything about them

I like the answer by "some polisci major" concerning Pakistan. One of the big weekly news magazines has a lengthy article this week about Pakistan (..not Time but the other mag..)

It's scary to think of the wackos in Iran having nuclear weapons, but as someone else said if they're really crazy enough to use them then all they've done is assure their own destruction.

Also, don't forget that Israel is pretty good at taking out sites where nuclear devices are being developed.

As to trying diplomacy with Iran...HA-HA-HA..! Ever tried to be diplomatic with a mad dog?

China and Russia won't allow the USA to attack. It is China and Russia helping them to get Nukes. Stay tuned and watch the news.

Let it have nukes. Pakistan is far more unstable than Iran, has ties to terrorists, and no one seems at all concerned about Pakistan having nuclear weapons. Is it because they're a 'friend' of the US?

Iran isnt just protecting itself, it is threatening us and not hiding anything... they hate us and they are an enemy. i dont think we should mindlessly attack them but if they do anything offensive toward us then it would be wise to probably take on the offensive and attack them.

Yeah, this fear mongering has got to stop. I agree with Valac Gypsy, Sailcat and the illustrious Psychic Cat. Also, I thought Al-Maghrebi's answer was wonderfully sarcastic and to the point.
