I'm wondering what you know about these two presidents and what you think of their "accomplishments" and things while they were in office. Do you think they were good presidents? What do you think of their actions?

What do you think about their dealings with the Indians? What could they have done differently? What did they do right?

Neither was a good President.

Jackson was a vain man who made enemies and kept them. He knew how to hate. He blamed the vicious campaign for the death of his wife, yet his campaign was equally as vicious. He didn't like what he called "Eastern Money" and he therefore worked to kill the Bank of the United States. He eventually killed it and as a result, there was the panic of 1837, which was left for Marin Van Buren to clean up.

Jackson also claimed to be for the little man, but that was campaign rhetoric. He allowed the common folk to trash the White House on Inauguration Day, but he wasn't anywhere to be seen. Had he been there, he might have stopped people with muddy boots climbing on the furniture. They were there because they thought he loved them, he really just wanted their votes.

As for Van Buren, he was Jackson's protege. So he tried to emulate him and had about the same success, not much.

Jackson wanted the Indians gone. Wherever they were, he wanted them elsewhere. You will note the Cherokee Trail of Tears was a result of a program started by Jackson and finished by Van Buren. It was a shameful episode in America's history.

Van Buren and Jackson cannot compare to the greatness of Millard Fillmore. He was so cool, he didn't even have a vice-president!!
