Back years ago I worked with a man whom would buy 10 to 12 packs of cigarettes before we went out on the job in the morning, at noon he would buy another 4 to 5 packs for the afternoon. I understood he and his wife would go through at least one carton every evening.

At times he would have 7 or 8 cigarettes going around an ashtray when he was working in the office. When he had smoked one down he lit another and put it in its place.

He is dead now from inficema and lung cancer. It was sad because he was really a nice guy. He talked me into going to university. He was a civil engineer and I worked for him as a chain-man and rod-man. I am sure all the second-hand smoke of his I breathed was having an effect on my life too at the time. I don't smoke and didn't then either.

Oh, I knew a guy that smoked 4 packs a day and had a normal life. I don't know anyone who's smoked more than that but I'm sure there's someone out there.

The most I've ever heard of is 4 packs/day.
