Best advice to be competitive with an NROTC scholarship is to do well on your SAT or ACT and show that you are well-rounded in your activities. Don't worry about not playing sports... if you have other extra-curricular activities you'll be fine. But STUDY STUDY for those tests!!

I would not be a bad idea either, to get a couple letters of recommendation from government officials if you can swing it. Try writing to your Congressman or Governor to see if you can get an interview.

During NROTC, you'll go to college and classes like any normal student except that once or twice a week (depending on your unit) you'll do military drill (learning marching, formation and other Naval customs). During the summers you'll be required to actually go out to the fleet for your Midshipman cruises (usually for 2 weeks) and get some hands-on experience.

As far as your studies go... you'll be able to major in whatever you'd like. In practice, it really doesn't have much bearing on what you'll be doing in the fleet. The four areas you mentioned (Surface, Aviation, Submarine and Spec Warfare) are the areas you will have to choose from as your specialty area when you graduate. Surface Warfare Officers are just that. They go out to the fleet to drive ships. Aviation Officers fly jets and helicopters. Submarine Officers drive submarines. And Special Warfare Officers go to units such as SEAL Teams, EOD (Explosive Ordinance Disposal) Units, or (SWCC) Special Warfare Combatant Craft units.

Good luck to you. Hope this helps.

Hello power2bowl:

Jessica's Man has some great tips. I would add that you will want to work on your physical conditioning. A team sport is helpful, but individual sports are also good. Would it be possible to join a local WMCA swim team? Does your community have a rowing team? martial arts? You will want to work on your basic exercises, running, push ups, sit ups and pull ups.

Contact the Military Science department at the university you are interested in attending, and ask the Professor of Military Science what he/she recommends for Scholarship preference. I missed out on a scholarship as my eyesight was too poor. If you wear glasses, ask about the specifications.

If you are just 16, you might also consider trying for Annapolis. Go to their website and take a look.

If you intend to study engineering, take as many mathematics courses as you can in high school. Try joining a math or engineering club if one is available. Apply for student government at your HS, and look for an after-school job. The student G will show that you have leadership potential, and the job will show that you have ambition.

You may have to interview for the scholarship; things to think about are your life career goals, why you want to be a Naval officer, what will you do if you can't get a scholarship.

You're off to a good start, keep it up.

Contact a NROTC at a university or college near your home. If you are able, take a tour of the det with one of your folks. They will tell you exactly what they give scholarships for and what you need to do to get one.....Yahoo answers is not the most reliable source for this kind of information.

One of the contributors frequently makes stuff up as she goes along. I think she knows a lot of stuff and just fills in the blanks as best she can.

ROTC ONLY produces URL Communities( and Spec War) if you take an ROTC scholarship, you will only be given one of those fields.

Engineering(AKA SeaBees) is not URL. You would have to go the OCS route.

To be competitive:
In HS:
AP/Honors /College Prep classes. Keep the grades higher. Lots of science and math. DO NOT smoke, drink, make babies or do ANY drugs.

In College: 3.5 or better GPA. Sports, Leadership, volunteerism. DO NOT smoke, drink, make babies.,or do ANY drugs.

Look into BDCP (Baccalaureate Degree Commissioning Program). that may qualify for Engineers. Kinda like ROTC, but not.
