Undoubtedly they were an amazingly advanced race,(surprising then they didn't know about the "one true god") and spent a great deal of time studying the stars and the movements of the planets. As seasons were so important to their culture it is not surprising that they based their calenders on these(and the length of time of pregnancy). It is however not surprising either that the long count should finish at some point,or were they supposed to make it eternal?People read too much into it.

I assure you that the world will not end on December 21, 2012 or in the near future. Nostradamus prediction when the earth will end is far into the future, past about 3700. In the book of Revelation, it tells us about a period of a thousand years of peace. Has this occurred already since the time of Jesus? Not yet. That will still come. Those that give such predictions as 2012 and numerous times during the past are pseudo-preachers. They have not talked to God directly yet.
But there is something that is certain—and that is our physical death. It may come when least expected. We do not know the day and the hour. It will come like a thief in the night. So we just have to be prepared all the time. Search for the true God and when we find Him, follow His commandments and remain in Him until our last dying breath.
This is all that we have to do. It is faith in Him that we can take with us when we depart from this world. If we deny Him, He will deny us also before the Father in Heaven. If we know Him and love Him and followed His commandments, then He may reward us to live with Him eternally in His kingdom in Heaven.

Take it with a grain of salt. The Mayans of that time couldn't 'see' into the field of thought of this new age. Nostrodamus saw the end of the world when he "saw" the end of the Catholic church. He couldn't imagine how the world could exist without it.
All prophecy is done at the subconscious level. They look at the thoughts of people in the future, not the actual physical world. They would not know the difference between a real event and one that was on TV/movie screens. For instance, this Iraq war was a world-watched war, but not a world war. They'd think it was a world war though.

Did you just say sylvia browne? wow come on now? if you believe in her crap than you have to believe in God. Those people in the audience have already talked to her, remember springer when it first came out? Yea it's like that, and for nostrodamus well as you can see he has no clue what he is talking about. I do believe he has made plenty of other predictions before and obviously were wrong. Nobody knows, and no one ever will know. That is why we don't wait around for our salvation, you must be saved now. We are not guarnteed tomorrow, believe in God, believe that we are sinners, pray to God and ask for forgiveness. Jesus Christ died on the cross for us, He paid the ultimate sacrifice for us, believe in Him. John 14:6 "Jesus saith unto him I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me"

The truth is that no one knows. If you look into history, the end of the world has been predicted so many times that it is remarkable. Is this proof that God does not exist? No, its proof that man does not know. Check out Matthew 24:42-44 and 1 Thessalonians 5:1-2. Anyone who gives you a date is ignoring scripture.

everybody thinks the mayan calendar will end in 2012, it's just actually the long count end of the 13th baktun...the mayans just like hopi believe the world was created and recreated several times... don't listen to conspiracy theorists...do you remember all that crap that the world was going to end at the yr 2000?
well we're all still here,
I'm more scared of us nuclear wintering the world...than some random end of 13th baktin!
also remember, all mayan groups aren't the same i read a book by a guy who went to tzutu jil tribe in santiago guatemala their view of creation is a bit different

The Mayans were probably thinking in terms of one age rolling into the next one... same as in India.
It's not the end of the world, but there will be some turmoil as we move on to a better age. It's a big change, and it might be a bit unsettling.

Nostradamus got his ideas from the bible...
silvia browne talks to demons....
the mayans might be the most accurate....the 2012 also seems to line up to some extent with bible prophesy of the last days.....and current events...look at Iran and the nuclear weapons threat that is already global....look at the earth changes..the hurricanes, volcanoes etc, tsunamis, floods,earthquakes...etc...look at the terrorist threat which will increase, because only a few countries are fighting it...
something may happen in the next 10 years or before. we are running out of oil resources, which is pushing russia , france and germany to align with Iran and syria, which is already prophetic in nature.....this will lead to the next world war.....Iran is pushing for war, because it is their belief that this will bring their islamic savior, the mahdi, the 12th imam.

In my lifetime (and I am not old), I have literally seen dozens of "definite" doomsday predictions - all have had "unmistakeable signs."
All have been wrong.
When I was a teen, the Cold War was still raging (we didn't know how close we were to its end); and the end of the world literally seemed like it could and would happen at any given time, with maybe a half-hour's warning. Today, we've got it easy.
Don't hide under your bed; get out there and live like you mean it.

There have been predictions of world endings since humans started to talk. Mostly a money making, cultist scheme, a joke or just somebody wanting to get 1 second of fame.
