the bladder can hold over 3 liters of urine at a time. it is a muscular organ and therefore stretches. the feeling of needing to pee is caused by the muscles at the back of the bladder wall stretching as it fills. it is very unlikely that the bladder will burst as it is so stretchy

According to most textbooks, the average adult bladder under normal conditions can hold anywhere beyween 16 and 32 ounces (1/2 to 1 liter). This of course varies by the person, some can hold more, some less. Storing 3 liters would be rare and most likely happen only in cases where there was some sort of blockage or muscle problem that prevented the bladder from emptying properly.

As for bursting or breaking from holding too much fluid, again, this is unlikely unless there were some sort of blockage forcing the urine to back up. (Otherwise the pressure would become too much for the bladder muscles to stay closed and you would simply wet yourself.) Even then, what would probably happen is that after the bladder stretched to the limit, urine would just keep backing up the ureters to the kidneys (hydronephrosis) causing kidney damage. The bladder CAN be ruptured by blunt force trauma to the lower abdomen (especially in males, who have fewer other organs in the way), but usually only if it's quite full. (If it's empty it is located way down in the pelvic cavity and well protected.)

Hope this helps!

Ordinarily the urge to urinate occurs when the bladder contains about 200 ml of urine.
