has it ever happened to you that you have said to somebody 'oh i have a headache' and they immediately reply with a 'oh me too and a stomach ache'

what is that? i hope it doesnt just happen to me!

It's often happened between my mum and her mum. If mum says she's ill, Gran says she's worse off. In that case it was competing for the listener's attention. A part of it could have been about "I'm tougher than you because I'm surviving more pain than you."
Sometimes though It's just about the other person bonding with you by letting you know they're in the same boat and that you're not alone.
Whatever the reason it all adds to the rich tapestry of life that is made up unique yet similar humans.

Well, some people may also have a headache, but also some people feel that the way they will get attention is because of some physical sickness and may feel in competition with someone who is also sick.

I wouldn't say that people are competeing, it's just that we all have our aches & pains & for the most part we just live with them.

Its a way of saying to each other that we are not alone out there.

It goes back to childhood, which is where much of our emotional life is still living. They think you are competing for attention and can't bear it, they want a slice of (mummy's) love also.
