I met my son's future mother-in-law and found her to be an intelligent person. She carried on a wonderful conversation with me and invited me to have dinner with her family. For this dinner, she had invited her 2 brothers and their families. I conversed about the charities that I raise money for and one of her brother's said he has 5 kids and he's a charity case. Everyone burst into laughter at his comment. Her other brother made the comment that he has 5 boxes of cereal. I asked why? He told me because he wanted a certain prize. I glanced at my son's future mother-in-law and she was looking straight at me. She raised one eyebrow and gave me a smirk smile. She never said anything, it was just that look that she gave me. I can't figure out why she gave me that look. What does it mean??

Well, of course, no one will be able to "decipher" what happened, because it's one of those things where you just had to be there.

But just guessing, it sounds to me like maybe the mother-in-law was sharing a "private joke" with you.

Maybe the brother who has five boxes of cereal is a simpleton?

I think you were being included in a little family joke about the brother's life style. The one who said that he is a charity case, probably provides very well for his family, and the one who mentioned the cereal, probably goes back to a family joke carried over from when they were all children. Her raised eyebrow was merely saying that she hoped you understood that they were only kidding. They sound like a delightful family.

Well, she could be psychotic.

She could be sharing a private joke with you like was said before, but the sad thing is you don't know her well enough to know what that joke is. Hmmm....

She could be laughing at you, because now she's not going to be the only one in the world related to these goofballs, and guess what? Your future grandchildren might inherit the "awkward in social setting sense of humor," Ha Ha!!

It could be too that she's received looks of "I'm not sure what's going on here," similar to yours from other people over the years and the quirky look is how she's learned to deal with it.

Give it a few years and I'll bet you know exactly what's going on and you then indeed will be 'sharing the joke'!!

She smirked at you because of the joke, you took her son's answer of wanting the prize to serious. Lighten up, no one is out to get you. They sound like a fun family and they invited you to dinner. Don't have a need to look for something to pick on.

If I am envisioning this scenario correctly, I interpret the future mother in law's raised eyebrow and smirk to say "Welcome to my crazy family!"

Perhaps she didn't want to wait until the wedding for you to discover that her brothers have an unusual sense of humor, and dinner with them was a small taste of what your son has to look forward to in the future.

When you get to know them better you'll probably figure out their "codes': but I would initially think maybe the comment about the prizes inside was implying you help with charities for the "prize," meaning prestige.
They sound rather "coy" to me...

I'm sure she was just sharing a joke with you, please don't make this anything then what it is. She must feel good about you to introduce you to the family and to show you that there are all kinds in all family's please don't judge or think your better your reading way to much into this clam down . That's something I would not have even given a second thought . your over reacting.

I'm sure because she might have been a tad embarassed by such a silly comment. And the look to you was more like a ,"God, please don't judge me and the rest of us by this dork!".

Why are you nitpicking one stupid look when everyone was laughing and having a good time? Perhaps she was just smirking about her son and his cereal quest.
