The universe is, for the most part, not together. Most of it is comprised of vast expanses completely devoid of stars, planets, or other astronomical objects. Any pieces of the universe that are held together are done so through one of the fundamental forces, most obviously gravity, which holds the Earth together. But the universe is slowly being pushed apart by dark energy, so eventually even the stars will, in theory, not be together anymore.

Not quite sure what you mean by this, as it seems to indicate that you think the universe should be flying apart. There are various attraction forces that work on different levels of matter. A large amount of "holding together" is done by gravity but at the sub molecular levels other forces come into play.

A very interesting question....Come to think of it, I understand that the whole Universe is supported by the Law of Attraction -positive and negative poles, in whatever form; or if we go deeper into its spiritual expression, the Law of Love.

The power of attraction, love -- My answer
Here's an article from Discover Magazine that addresses the question. It's from 2000, so I don't know whether there's newer information.

Nothing, it is there, forever expanding, and contracting in some places, but in reality, we hold it together, for if we weren't here to wonder, there would be just an infinite, hollow, desolate, cold, dark emptiness.

Matter affects matter across the non-material field of space and centers itself in its environment. Space is not a void but a medium. Some call it dark matter.
