I know some people who have always been on a diet, counting calories of everything they eat or drink, always talking about losing weight but still can't lose weight. that includes me too. and i know those other people who never diet and never ever care about calories. they don't even know how many calories a tomato has. and they are fit. how come?

I think it's more of someone's metabolism -- how quickly can someone's body break down those calories versus storing them as fat. Perhaps other times, some people exercise more to burn those calories rather than storing them.

I guess there's also genetics, though I'm not sure if there's an "obese" gene. Some obese people lack a hormone telling them when to stop eating so they keep eating without really knowing when to stop. But if you're counting calories, then that can't really be that big of a factor.

I think it's sad when skinny people are on a diet. As if some skinny people need to be thinner!!

Diets are not a very effective way of losing weight. Start exercising daily and eating healthy food with less empty calories and you will start to see the results over time. Dieting may work for some people in the short term, but, like anything, they can not last forever and the weight will eventually come back unless life-style changes are made.

Think about the word "diet" It means your eating habits. The doctor says "how's your diet?" He doesn't mean how are you losing weight, but how are your eating habits. So the reason fat people are always on a diet as we know it is because they don't have good eating habits and that's what makes them fat. They think that "dieting" is eating to lose weight and then they go back to the same old habits, when really being on a diet is learning how to eat to restore the body to it's true proportions, forever and a day.

Because people who don't have weight problems don't "need" to care how many calories are in a tomato or how much energy a body burns walking a 1/4 mile on a treadmill...

Its the same reason why people who don't work at NASA don't know anything about rocket science.

It is the total amount you eat through the day. You are still eating too much. Ignore the calories ; stop counting them. Eat more fruit and vegetables....and I mean a LOT more.
Water has no calories ; this should be your only drink.

Unfortunately, peoples bodily makeup differs so some can eat half a carrot and put on weight, others can each a whole chocolate cake and still be skinny as a rake.. You appaear to be in the former category. If someone can work out the skinny hormone they will become very rich

I used to agree with what you've just said, but once I joined Weight Watchers I realized that its not completely true. There are women & men in my WW classes that are so thin, if I were that thin I wouldn't be trying to lose weight! But they worked hard to be thin, and are still working hard to stay thin.

Just because you don't see them counting calories & working out every single day doesn't mean they aren't or never have struggled with their weight. Keep that in mind!

I agree to disagree. When you get older, you calorie intake has to adjust, dramatically past 50. I have the same weight since I was 20, but then I ate everything in my reach, now I try not to reach for everything I want to eat.

That's the way the cookie crumbles. I'm very lucky, I suppose, because I'm slim and have been since I was 12, no matter what I eat. I smoke, that helps me not eat too much, and sometimes I let myself go hungry if I feel like I haven't used up enough energy to warrant a big dinner, but mainly I get to eat whatever I want with no fatness occurring. All that happens when I eat more, is I fart and crap more.

It's genetics. People who tend to be skinny regardless of diet are called ectomorphs. People who tends to carry alot of bodyfat are endomorphs. People that has more lean muscle are called mesomorphs. But whatever you are, you can always lose weight with proper diet and exercise.
