This is what I was just told by a believer. If this is true, then how do you explain the computer you are on right now? You don't NEED that to serve him, do you?

Kind of makes you wonder why Christians would end up with CANCER.

Thank you Jesus for this holiest of tumors...

The answer is no. God has been shown to bless people for their good works and reward them for a job well done. In the Bible there are many instances where God blesses people with extra land, or extra flocks because they followed the will of the Lord. They don't need the extra flocks to serve him faithfully, but God rewarded them with extra because he loves his children who serve him.

The difference between need and want is very hard to differentiate in this day and age.

Also, I'm glad you didn't just agree with whatever the believer said...most views of believers are generally tainted with their own beliefs, so it's hard to know what God actually wants from us when we're taught different things.

Personally, I see very little direct influence from God on earth right now. Yes, he may have sent Jesus years ago to show people God is real, but when is the last time you saw a REAL miracle, or something God did directly to influence your life? Has God spoken directly to you recently? Does he smite down those around you as he did in the Bible?

I don't think so. But I hope I'm wrong.

I don't think so. I have a lot of blessings that I think are just things God knows I need or want. I mean, I could serve God without my son, but having my son is absolutely a blessing. I think God is like a good parent, he gives us what we need to succeed, and sometimes he gives us something just because it makes him happy to make us happy.

If God were to only give you the bare necessities of living how could you help other people?

God will provide all my needs, and then some if He chooses. I am blessed to be a blessing. How can I feed the poor, help someone in need, things like that, if I am barely getting by myself?

God blesses his servants with the necessary things to live. The other things, such as this computer, tv, etc... are choices that we make to have. I think that what it comes down to, is that if you are serving God correctly, he will help sustain you with the necessities even if you fall upon hard times. But it works both ways. We have to work in harmony with our prayers. So we can't just say, I'm going to quit my job and God will sustain me. We have to put forth the effort to achieve what we pray for in harmony with God's will.

Perhaps the computer permits me to conduct my holy ministry?

This issue is a complex one. David, Solomon, Abraham, Jacob, Isaac, Job, Joseph -- were all wealthy beyond our imagination (for their days that is)

Being wealthy is not a sin -- loving money is, greed is.

However, if you as a Christian expect and wait for God to answer a prayer for a Rolls Royce -- you could easily wait a millennium or more in vain for this prayer to get a positive response.

The Bible counsels self sufficiency, putting the service of God before the seeking of material pursuit. It counsels that if we do that God will not forget our true needs and help us with these.
------------
The question is too complex to get a full answer here.

But one more detail: the Saints though not taking a vow of poverty generally shall be reduced to poverty by God's will until their dying day perhaps.

This is done to test them to the full as Job were. They still get God's help and his "bread of adversity and the water of affliction." (ASV)

Hey girl!

I think it is implied that God will bless with beyond just the things you need at times. I don't know what the criteria for receiving a blessing is, I haven't figure it out, but...

I think people who say otherwise are promoting a false humility.

Warning, bible verse below! ;-)

Matthew 7:7-11

7 "Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 8 "For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. 9 "Or what man is there among you who, when his son asks for a loaf, will give him a stone? 10 "Or if he asks for a fish, he will not give him a snake, will he? 11 "If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give what is good to those who ask Him!

Good point about the computer, but what is it that makes people believe that in order to follow Christ you must be impoverished? I believe that if he has asked someone to forsake his wealth then that is a different thing, but I don't believe that just because someone is Christian, it means they can have nice things.

I'm not Christian, but there is a major gap in your arguement.

In these days, why not spread the word virtually???
If you live in a deserted area, the internet would be the only way to get people to realize (I can't beleive I'm saying this) "the Almighty Presence of God".
