I understand "Hello" is a good start, but it only gets you so far.

Do you mean as part of the introductions?

Repeat each person's name that you are introduced to.

Example:

"Jane, I would like you to meet Sally Brown. Sally, this is Jane Smith."

You respond: " Sally, how very nice to meet you." And then add a small bit of chit chat such as, "Did you have a safe trip?" or "May I get you something to drink?" or "We've been having the most beautiful weather here so you timed your trip perfectly."

I would think you should introduce yourself and shake hands. You might inquire as to what the people do for a living, what hobbies they have. Depending on where you are meeting them, you might ask how they happen to be there.

Making small talk is always good, and people like to talk about themselves.

Hello seems like a good beginning.
Remember to smile while doing this, snarling at people or lookign like you will kill them generally makes peopel rather afraid.
