The technology is so sophisticated unless you have formal training, the only thing you'llaccomplish by cracking the case is voiding any warranty left.

It sounds like its a lcd tv projection. I have a Panasonic 43" and it just went out. Its lamp went out it warned me after about 2.5 years after I bought it. The lamps will last about 5000 hours. If you cant turn it back on that would be the case. My tv did the same thing but it had popped. They are about 200-300 dollars to replace. You can look in the trouble shooting area of the manual and see if thats the case. Or you could also go to the hitatchi website and see what it says. Good luck.

What jwhatley said is true. Do not open the Tv and start messing around with it. If a capacitor were to discharge when you touched it you would be fried most likely. It does not have to be plugged in to the electrical outlet for this to happen. Same thing goes for computer monitors.

have you looked on the back of the set
for a 'reset' button

may have overloaded

also try unplugging it and then plugging and restart

if it was an old ube model - you see which tube is not lighting up - and replace it

but now - with transistors and circuit board - - - -

may be time for a new HDTV - as the technology is changing in a couple of years in America

I would suggest you take it in to be checked, there are some dangerous capacitors that can result in electrocution if you decide to open the back yourself.

sounds like an element inside of it could have blown up, it probably an't be fixed and it costs loads to get it fixed so it might be easier to get a new one
