Or neither, or both?

I actually don't think there are many extremists here of any kind. Few people are pushing the Fred Phelps or Osama Bin Laden line, and not many people are going beyond Dawkins and calling for religious people to be persecuted. I think it is a subject that people are passionate about, but being passionate is not being extreme. It depresses me that healthy and vigorous disagreement is somehow thought of as a bad thing. It isn't.

Maybe both. I think most everyone starts out on a level playing field with a level head, but then someone says something they don't like and the gloves appear.

Also, this might be a good venue for those people who do not want to face people while they bash others beliefs and this is a nice place to do so. They never have to be confronted or confront (face to face) and it is a way for them to get it out.

Based on my experience, which is basically stumbling upon this place, I would not say that it attracts anyone. However, as in many social situations, when confronted with extremism, it tends to bring out a polarizing reaction in all. Some gravitate to the same pole and others to the opposite pole.

I would say that any internet forum for public expression brings out the best in folks. Mostly b/c there is no consequence for their action.

I would bet my left boobie that 90% of the people on here are not NEARLY as *extreme* in real life as they are on the net. I know people wont freely admit that, but its the truth.

I see it like this... most people come here with what they believe is a reasonable set of beliefs. When they realize so many others disagree (no matter what one believes) people tend to dig in their heels to defend their beliefs. Thus, extremist viewpoints seem to evolve in R&S.

A bit of both. I have noticed people that were once rather mild mannered on here change their religious or spiritual view point and become rather fanatical or rather aggressive and rude to particular groups.

i would say it attracts more than it creates. although, i had a much nicer view of christianity before i came here. yes, there are tons of great christians, but i had no idea there were so many hateful ones

edit: magley - primoa is a fundie, but he's one of the few who actually care about YOUR salvation, rather then trying to convert you to win brownie points with his god.

A little bit of both.......

I guess I'm considered a "fundie".......which would place me at one end of the spectrum.

And at the same time......people who hang out here 24/7 can easily become one.

i think it attracts more than it creates, but i'm sure there are some cases where it dispells them, too...
