A non-runner is a horse that is withdrawn from the race after the declarations are made (usually 24-48 hours before the race) and before the race starts.

There can be many reasons why a horse is a non-runner, but the trainer has to provide a satisfactory explanation as to why the horse was withdrawn - be it a vet certificate if the horse is injured, or a statement that a change in the ground conditions meant the horse would be unsuited.

A non-runner gets you your stake money back.
A Winner makes you a profit on your stake.
A loser meand you have done your stake aget nothing back.
So a non-runner is better than a loser but no where near as good as a winner! :-)
