I have to change his diet. I want to make it myself but i want to make sure its healthy and balanced. Anyone heard of any good ones? Also he is really itchy(its definately not fleas). I read somewhere this could be linked to kidney trouble. Any advice would be welcome.

Sadly there is not much you can do apart from change the diet when the kidneys start to fail. IV fluid treatments can help some, but when the test results after are not susstained for more than a week or so I learned the hard way it's best not to carry on with them. I lost a much loved friend to kidney faliure a little over 4 years ago.

I used to make her food too, but in the end she never ate much of enything so at that point the vet said just give her what she wanted as it was too late anyway.

I used to mix either boiled chicken breast or cooked ground beef with rice, hard boiled egg, a couple of crushed Tums for calcium and a vitamin mix from my vet. I can;t remember the exact amount of each. The vet gave me the recipe. It worked for her for a few weeks. She was very advanced though when diagnosed as she showed no early symptoms.

You may find a warm bath with a good quality oatmeal shampoo will help with the itching.

One thing I would advise is that although the IV fluid treatments can help in the early stages once the condition gets really advanced and you need to start doing them more than once a week there is little point in doing it. My vet at the time fooled us by thinking we could have an extra quality year or 2 if we kept doing them. After I knew he was only saying this for the money. We spent $4,500 in 2 1/2 months on these treatments. They were never giving her more than a good day or 2. Unless you are getting good results that last a decent amount of time it's best just to let go. We were fooled by listening to what we wanted to hear. In the end we listened to what she was telling us in her own way.

I pray you have lots of quality time left with your little one. I'll say a prayer for you both

I have a product myself called Restore and Rebuild, but for a different reason (colitis), and read in the dog paper this week that many dog owners have found it very successful in treating kidney and liver disease. A friend of mine also used it after her dog had been kicked by some yobs and the one kidney was only functioning by 50%, she was given a 50/50 chance of survival and on a drip for three days. After using protect and rebuild she is now 100% fit.

No, itchiness is not linked to kidney disease. Why are you so certain it isn't fleas?

Please take this questions directly to a vet. Do NOT attempt to make your own food without discussing it with a vet. You need a diet that has low amounts of high quality protein, and is low in phosphorus - do you know what ingredients these would be?

DO NOT take ANY advice from online, either from strangers on here or other websites. You don't know what you're reading! Most of it is complete nonsense. Please have a long chat with your vet. They didn't go to med school for 5 years for their knowledge to be replaced by trash on the internet.

I couldn't just sit around and do nothing like my doctors suggested.

They didn't want me to do anything or to take herbs or herbal remedies, but I had to try something - they just wanted me to do dialysis!

This program allowed me to take control of my health. I went from Stage 4 to Stage 3 kidney disease.

It was easy to do and my BUN, creatinine and anemia are all in better ranges.

Get him some Prescription Royal Canin diet or Eukabana food. Discuss this with your vet if unsure. Go to www.VetsUK.co.uk as they are a lot cheeper than vets or pet stores
