Prayer is the mental and sometimes vocal act of positive thinking.
Poitive thinking helps the body to recover from injury, and illness, and gives a brighter outlook.
It is not talking to an other form of being, it is only a way of aiding yourself!!

Many people will tell you that prayer is a way of asking God for something that you want. Granted I pray that my uncle overcomes cancer, prayer should never be about selfish things, i.e. winning the lottery.

A true advantage of prayer is a conversation with God. Now before you get down on your knees and expect to hear the booming voice of God, realize that it's more of a conversation with yourself. You can feel God speaking with you at the moment of epiphany, maybe you came up with the answer to your problem on your own, maybe God planted it there. It's debatable, but those moments of meditative prayer focused your mind and freed it from all other thoughts and stress.

It is talking to God.We are his children and we should talk to Him.Wouldn't you feel bad if your children never talked to you.If you are not saved He can't hear you but if you have asked Him in your heart and accepte him as your Lord and Savor He will anwser your prayers and you will have a closer walk with Him and you will be able to know what He wants you to do in this life.He answers all your prayers somtimes He says No to what you want because we get needs and wants mixed up sometimes and our wants will not be good for us.Just like our Children we love them and want to give them everthing they want but somthings are not good for them like playing out in the middle of the interstate. The more you pray the more your question will be ansered from God and then you will understand the meaning and advantage of prayer.

Meaning: try to approach the Lord.
Advantages: Approach the Lord.

But a prayer or the chant of mantras with no real faith is meaningless.

prayer just means a one on one conversation with God, and the advantage is knowing how much you are loved, how much he cares for, and that he will stand by you through every single moment in your life.

Prayer is simply being humble and asking God for something or simply thanking Him.
All prayer should be directed to God, THROUGH his son Jesus.
(John 14:6) Jesus said to him: “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

Prayer is the offering up of our desires onto God, for things agreeable to His will - in the name of Christ, with the confession of our sins and thankful acknowledgement of His mercies.

Thomas Watson wrote "Prayer is a glorious ordinance, it is the soul's trading with heaven. God comes down to us by his Spirit, and we go up to him by prayer."
