Maybe I just get too hung up about it... but it can get a bit awkward at times when you buy something at a shop, you have your bag over your shoulder, your wallet in one hand, then the person behind the counter puts the notes, coins and receipt in your other hand.

You fumble to get the coins in the right section of your wallet, then the notes, and there are people behind you waiting. Not wanting to hold them up, you walk over to the side somewhere holding money and wallet, then stuff everything in as fast as possible and fix it up later.

That or just throw all the notes and money randomly in your bag and don't bother about putting it in your wallet.

Why... why is it all so awkward? Is there some proper way to handle the change that the employee gives you?
I feel like I'm holding people up if I try to put it all in the right place. And I feel a bit silly walking around with money and wallet and everything else in my hand or just chucking it in my bag.

Is this what everyone does anyway? What is the best thing to do?

yes, everyone is in a hurry these days.......and it seems that we don't give ourselves time to put things in their proper space, not wanting to hold someone behind us up........I sometimes just throw everything in my purse myself because I know the person in back of me is getting anxious having to wait........that said, I don't think it's unreasonable to take a few moments to place your change, bills, and receipts in their proper place.........if you can move to the side and do this it might be a bit better......because then you would not be so stressed as to think that you are holding everyone up...........once in a while you do get those people in line however who take like 5 minutes putting everything away, which really does hold up the line...they are slower than slow....I can't stand the people who are done with their transactions and still continue to chit chat with the checker while other people are standing in line waiting their turn.....but as a rule, I would just take my time and place things where they belong. You have every right to complete your transaction which begins when you pick out the item(s) that you decide to purchase and ends right before you exit the store after you have paid for your item(s), been handed your item(s) by the store clerk, and placed your receipts and any change that you have received from the clerk in there proper place and walk away from the register.

I asked a similar question a few months ago and was blasted by people telling me to use my debit card and I wouldn't have this problem!

I agree with you. It is very awkward and the situation could be helped if the cashiers would hand you the change and receipt differently. It has become common practice here to put the bills in your hand, then the receipt, then the coins on top of that, leaving the customer to sort it and put it away as they are rushed (practically pushed at Walmart)away from the register.

I hate holding up the line while trying to get my purse situated, but I also feel very vulnerable stepping away from the register with my purse in one hand, wallet in the other and trying to get my money put away in a safe manner. You never know (especially with the holiday season approaching) when someone will just help themselves to your purchases or your purse and make a mad dash for the nearest exit. I've seen it happen!

Slow down and don't let the salesperson or the next in line push you into rushing and fumbling. Take your time and put everything away. The practice of throwing the bills, then coins, then receipt into the hand is annoying anyway. The coins should be given first so you can dispense with them. Then the bills and receipt. But everyone is in such a rush they throw the wad into your hand so you are left trying to sort it out. So take a moment and do so.

It can be awkward, but try not to worry.....feeling anxious will just slow things up even more....:)

I usually know about how much I'll be paying at the register; so when I'm paying cash I take the cash from my wallet before I'm at the register, put my wallet away (either in my front pocket or back in my bag). When the clerk gives me change, I put it in my front pocket, and step away from the counter. I put the money back in my wallet either when I'm back in my locked car, or if I'm at the farmer's market I find a bench and sort things out.

To be honest, I have a credit card that I use as a 30 day account; I pay it off in full each month. I find it much easier to use the credit card when I'm on shopping trips-it's much easier to slip it back into my wallet at the register, and I don't have to worry about dealing with change.

Don't feel awkward, sort your money out in your own time. Put it away safely otherwise you may lose it. If the people in the queue have problems with that, it's their problem, they have no manners. Hold your head up, take your change and smile! Although I must admit when I am shopping and i do the same I do always end up apologizing for making the people behind me wait!

I know how you feel. I used to be introverted and I still like to be alone sometimes. There's nothing wrong with being shy, it's just who you are. But if you want to become more social all you have to do is reach out to people, and they'll respond. If you're not comfortable talking to people that are more social and outgoing, you can find comfort in others who are also equally shy. All you have to do is take the first step and the next time the person sees you they'll reach out to you.

I make sure that I put my money in properly. Think of it this way. If you spend a couple of extra seconds at the till to make it neat, then when you spend your notes, they wont be all bent and crinkled - which is REALLY annoying and messes up a change drawer. Therefor, you are making it easier for the next person you buy off.

I either stuff the change in a pocket and sort it out later or, put the bag(s) down and put everything where it belongs. It only takes a few seconds and why the hell is everyone in such a hurry? A few seconds won't kill you...

This happens a lot. Just step over to the side and do your fumbling so you dont hold up the line.
