Rome is a stunning city and everywhere you turn there are some beautiful sights. I was there in April this year and really loved it. We were very lucky with the weather as well.

My personal favourite was The Forum - stunning - and free! You stand there totally in awe of what it would have been before it was ruins. The coliseum is very impressive and we wandered there the first night and got some amazing photo's as the sun was setting through the windows.

Other parts of Rome I loved were the Spanish Steps (views to the Vatican in the distance), the Pantheon and the Vatican. We joined a tour group and jumped the worst of the queues, however the tour guide just talked for 45 mins and hardly went anywhere so we vanished off on our own. The hallways that lead to the Sistine chapel were stunning and once in the chapel a kind of hushed awe comes over you. It is absolutely tiny but if you appreciate art, it is spell binding. Some of the gaudiness of other parts made me feel a little sick.

Away from the Vatican there is a castle (I can't remember the name) it is off the beaten track and is really interesting. Plus the big white marble memorial in the middle of the city and I've forgotten the name of it as well, but it is truly stunning and worth a visit.

Finally, Circus Maximus, just away from the Forum, an open strip of land where everyone goes to chill out, this is where they used to have all the chariot rides etc in ancient times. And it was here where I had the best hotdog in the world! But it was somewhere to chill out in the busyness that was Rome at Easter.

The Colosseum and the Roman Forum, buy your ticket for the whole lot up at the entrance to the Forum and skip the queues into the Colosseum.

Also the Parthenon, the Aventine (the views over the river and city from the Aventine hill are marvellous), the Spanish Steps and the Trevi Fountain. Wander around the Trastavere area of the city too. Try and get to the Via Appia if you can.

Personally I found the Vatican creepy, but it is good to see once. If you want to see the Vatican's art treasures and the Sistine Chapel, you need to get there very early in the morning as the queues can get very long very quickly.

The Colosseum, the Vatican and the Spanish Steps are three.... to start with. If you get a chance, go a bit further south to Napoli... From there you can visit Capri (the Blue Grotto is a 'must see') and Mount Vesuvius.

Roma is wonderful. Only walking along its streets is a unique experience, especially by night.
Just try to see all the places you can.

Enjoy our Rome

The city of Rome itself has a great bus tour that stops at all the hot spots. You can catch it in several spots...the train station is one for sure. I highly recomend it.
