There are two parts to religion. One is an inclusion of basic rules of behavior and morals. Most people ascribe to this so the answer for that portion would be yes. The second part is the spooks, with souls, angels, imps, god, demons, devils, and ghosts. A substantial part of the population swallows this hook, line and sinker. It is less than a majority but is substantial as a portion. Then there are those who are superficially accepting and do not quite consider it ridiculous. Then there is a strong minority who do not believe but are not certain so make no protests. Then there is a smaller minority, perhaps fifteen per cent who are atheist, but may or may not so proclaim themselves so to be.
Taking the moral acceptors, then adding the spook believers and those that tentatively go along, the answer would seem to be yes. Counting the more intelligent, whether or not they go public, and eliminating the moral motivators who do so regardless of spook affiliation, one might answer no.

In the olden days, the laws used to be based upon religion.
These days, the Western laws are set upon POWER! (although they propogate that the laws are set for protection).
The East is all religious and nowadays the americans are trying to make them captilist.
In a documentary, It is said that 'America invaded Iraq to take care of Saddum, but thats all they wanted to do. They didnt have a long time plan. They didnt want to set a government. They thought that the Iraqis would have set there own government'.
Yet again they try to propoganda and lie. Except, the big mistake they made was, that the Iraqis did have their own idea of a government. If they never than could someone please tell me why there is a civil war? Al-Zarqawi was trying to impose Shariah Law!
But why didnt this happen? because America didnt want shariah, even though its not their country.
But why would they care since its not their country? because they want to impose democracy so that they can put a puppet leader in power and steal more and more Oil!!!!
Next example,
Afghanistan was a country full of junkies. Yes, girls used to get raped in the plenty. There was no control. Than Russia invades. Osama Bin Laden and the Taliban fight for freedom! They are successful! Than they try to clean up the land.
They took care of the raptist and criminals.
They even took care of those who where cruel to animals!
Than they implemented shariah.
America dislikes it.
They begin attacking Al-Qaeda and the Taliban!
Than they begin Propogating that Al-Qaeda and the Taliban are 'Terrorist'
Why? because they hate "SHARIAH"! Well that could only be the reason!
Next example,
Australia allows the Christian Democratic Party to run however, Not Hizb ut tahrir?
You can call hizb ut tahrir the Islamic party.
But whats the difference?
Well the christian democratic party want to destroy the wearing of the burqa and put a 10 year moratorium on muslim immigrants so muslim reject SHARIAH!!!
These day there is NOWAY anyone can say the western society is religious as a whole!!

I can't talk about America - but Europe - certainly western Europe seems to be primarily secular,
While of course there are churches and religion and the religious - in the over all running of countries and even daily life I would say ours is a secular society.

Our western society is religious, in the sense that a high percentage of our people believe enough in God or spiritual forces, that they do religious rituals and prayer/meditate. They try to be moral to some extent and try to have a moral society to some extent. But, drugs, overindulgence in food, and an overuse of our world resources tends to dull our spiritual senses and hurt our ability to do good, for ourselves, for our own society, and for the world. So, we have a ways to go, when it comes to really being religious. Another factor that harms us, is that we tend not to be sensitive enough, to the beliefs and ideas of the rest of the world, and too confident in what we belief and our ideas.

No, it is largely secular, which means that there is no 'official' religion and societies within most so-called 'Western' countries are free to be more or less religious as per population/individual beliefs.

when it's convenient to be religious, western society is religious. this usually happens when there are funerals, elections, stirrings in the news about gay rights or abortion, or when westerners are at grandma's house for easter/ christmas. the rest of the time, western society is quite irreligious. this is made obvious by the content of our prime-time tv shows and our lifestyle.
sadly, most christians here in america don't know much about christianity or the bible, nor do they attend church on a regular basis.

We hear day in and day out that 'this country was founded on christian religious values' and it is empirically true. As the days go by and research material becomes more and more readily available, dogma is slowly being lifted and left behind for truth, or at least theory.
In life evidence is far more important than answers.
One shows truth, the other is a personal truth.

The way I see it, it is becoming more secular every day. In the US we have a big push to take out anything with "God" out of anything to do with the government. In Western Europe some nations have turned to socialism and their population is declining due to lower birthrates.( yes birthrates can be attributed to other things, but I'm attributing it to this.)

Being religious is not an advantage, what matters is being righteous towards God.
