There are two different types of "life" sentences -- a simple "life" sentence and life without parole. Life without parole is a relatively new concept and means just that -- You will be in prison for the rest of your life without the possibility of parole. Unless you are pardoned or your sentence is commuted, you die in prison. A "life" sentence, on the other hand, in many jurisdictions means you are still eligible for parole. When your eligibility comes up, it is up to the parole board if you will be released. MANY people have been released on parole from life sentences. This is the whole rationale for the Life without parole sentence.

No, not the full term. That would mean you have to die in prison , then come back to life, in order to be released [except of course, to the coroner].
