To counter your long face you need a style with width but not length at the front. A 'bob' is the obvious answer but the length to choose would depend upon the rest of your facial features.
If your face is quite long but fairly pointed I would 'round-it-out' with a chin-length bob. If your chin area is quite square I would go for a shorter (maybe lip-length) bob to draw attention away from it - the shorter the bob generally the greater the volume too. You could flick the ends out to add volume or even build in curls - the bob length gives you plenty of options.
If you want the style more 'edgy', then leave the front as above but have the back either clippered (for an inverted bob), stacked or short and spiked for an A-line. Take a look in the 'Locks Of Fury' Community in Live Journal for funky / edgy bobs / A-lines or post pictures there and ask for advice!

Long or "Oblong" Face Shapes
Ahhh, the long face shape. The perfect haircut for us is one that doesn't drag down the face, yet adds width.
Styles that are flattering: Side-swept bangs (I plan to never go without them again). Chin-length bobs are also ideal for us because they create the illusion of width. We look great curly or wavy (these also add width).
Avoid: Stay away from extremely long or short cuts. These elongate your face. Long hair looks best with a few layers cut in, especially around the face. You might also consider a v-shaped style, where the length is mainly in the back, while the sides and front of your hair appear shorter. For more information, check out this photo gallery of best hairstyles for long face shapes.
Super hot styles now: Long layers.
Celebs who share your face shape: Sarah Jessica Parker, Ashlee Simpson, Giselle Bundchen
Styling tools you can't live without: A great volumizer. My favorite is Bumble and Bumble Thickening Spray, I also love the hairspray Big Sexy Hair Flip it Over Full and Wild.

Length would probably be better longer (and down not tied up) but the best thing would be thick hair as this will make it less obvious

for me it depends upon the girl. Like I might observe a girl with black hair and also think she is totally hot but see a girl with blond tresses that is meh and vice versa.
